frequently asked questions

  • Debate is a structured, goal-oriented discussion of differing perspectives on current or significant issues. It not only enables clear articulation, persuasive presentation, and effective argumentation but also sharpens critical thinking, logical reasoning, and research skills. By welcoming all voices and emphasising respectful engagement, debate becomes a collaborative forum for diverse ideas, fostering open-mindedness and informed discourse rather than mere competition.

  • Our debate nights focus on community-chosen issues, discussed in timeboxed sessions moderated by a chairperson. We begin by welcoming everyone, outlining the Code of Conduct, and inviting volunteers to argue for or against a chosen motion.

After a quick warm-up using practice topics, we move on to a parliamentary-style debate, where each speaker gets a set amount of time to make their case.

Finally, the audience votes to decide the outcome. Whether you choose to speak or simply observe, you’ll find an inclusive environment that encourages respectful, thought-provoking discussion.

  • It’s entirely up to the audience. After the final speaker has made their case, the audience casts their votes, typically using a simple poll.

The motion is deemed successful if a majority votes in favour; otherwise, it’s considered defeated. This transparent process ensures that the outcome reflects the collective opinion of everyone participating in the debate.

  • We encourage everyone in our community to suggest possible debate topics.

The Law Society also submits ideas for motions. From this pool of suggestions, we select motions that are timely, engaging, or particularly relevant to current discussions.

This collective approach ensures that our debates are always lively, inclusive, and reflective of the interests of the community.

  • At our debate nights, we believe that everyone’s voice deserves to be heard. We provide an open, inclusive platform where you can share your perspectives, learn from those around you, and engage with a variety of viewpoints in a respectful setting. By taking part, you’ll not only strengthen your public speaking and critical thinking skills but also discover the value of truly listening to others.

We aim to foster a sense of community where respect, open-mindedness, and constructive feedback are paramount. Our structured debates nurture both the courage to express your convictions and the humility to consider opposing ideas. In the spirit of Winston Churchill’s words, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” every participant’s contribution adds to the richness of the conversation.

Whether you’re a seasoned speaker or entirely new to the debate format, there’s room for you at our events. Join us, share your voice, and see how inclusive, thoughtful discussion can expand horizons and bring people together.

  • We maintain fairness by following a timeboxed debate structure and entrusting a neutral chairperson to moderate the discussion. This approach counters the misconception that debating is just an unstructured exchange of views. Instead, each participant has an allocated time to present their arguments, and the chairperson enforces these limits, intervening when necessary to keep the proceedings on track.

Alongside this, we operate under Chatham House Rules. This means that while the ideas and information shared can be discussed outside the event, the identity and affiliation of any speaker—or any other participant—must remain confidential. To safeguard everyone involved, we have a strict policy against hate speech or bullying. By combining clear rules, confidentiality, and respect for all viewpoints, we create an environment where everyone can speak candidly yet courteously. This structure not only ensures the debate is well-organised and enlightening, but also prevents any single perspective from dominating the conversation.

  • We welcome all members of our community to propose debate topics. When choosing a motion, it helps to keep the following aspects in mind:

    🌟 Relevance
Pick a subject that’s timely and resonates with current events or societal issues.

    🧩 Complexity
Aim for a topic that prompts deeper thinking—something that isn’t straightforward or one-dimensional.

    🔥 Controversy
Consider a theme that naturally divides opinion, offering a clear “for” and “against” perspective.

    🎓 Educational Value
Make sure the topic encourages learning or skill development, whether through researching facts or formulating well-structured arguments.

    ⚖️ Balance
Choose a motion where both sides have valid points, so the debate feels even-handed and engaging.

    🔍 Clarity
Keep your motion concise and focused, ensuring that everyone understands exactly what’s being debated.
